If you like something more energetic there are many walks and cycling routes of all levels of fitness that can be taken ranging from a couple of hours around Loughrigg Fell to full day walks up Scafell Pike. Books and leaflets are available from local shops and information centre’s outlining how to get to the fells (English hills/mountains). As the gateway to the famous Langdale Valley, Ambleside is also a major rock climbing centre. There is no equipment or guidance that cannot be found in this area. Ambleside is also one of the major town's on The Windermere Way, a circular walk that takes you all the way around Lake Windermere. The total length of the walk is about 45 miles. One of the main ports for Windermere Lake Cruises is situated in the Waterhead area of Ambleside and departs at regular intervals.
